What goes into our tissue products?

We don’t say that Naked Paper tissue products are “chemical free,” because everything is made of chemicals. The natural pine sap glue that holds our tissue plies together is, strictly speaking, a chemical compound. So is water.

What we do say is that Naked Paper is free from harsh chemicals like the chlorine bleach or peroxide used in ECF and TCF bleaching (we don’t use any kind of bleaching chemicals at all). We also don’t use any harmful additives like formaldehyde, which can be found in other toilet paper and tissue products.

At Naked Paper we only use ingredients that are non-toxic and neutral in their environmental impact. Every ingredient we use meets REACH standards, giving it a clean bill of health for both our bodies and the planet.

Our ingredients list

The specific product names of our ingredients are commercially sensitive and wouldn’t make much sense unless you’re an industrial paper maker. So instead we’ve described each ingredient and its purpose, so you know exactly what goes into Naked Paper, and why.

Raw materials:

Bamboo
Our FSC-certified bamboo comes to us by sea freight in the form of dehydrated blocks of chipped bamboo. This is much more efficient to ship than bamboo logs!

Recycled card and paper
To make our recycled products, we collect waste cardboard boxes and packaging paper from businesses in the area around our factory

Water
We use water to soften our bamboo and recycled cardboard, forming a smooth pulp which can be turned into tissue.

Other ingredients:

As well as bamboo, recycled card and paper, and water we need just a handful of other ingredients to make our soft, sustainable tissue products.

All products:

A fibre binder
This helps the paper fibres stick together while the tissue is drying, so they settle into smooth, even sheets.

Pine sap adhesive
A plant-based resin made from pine sap holds our plys of paper together to make soft 2-ply tissue.

A natural release oil
Like olive oil in a pan, a natural release oil helps the paper lift cleanly off the drying cylinders instead of sticking.

Recycled products only:

Cleansing salts
Our recycled products are made from cardboard boxes and packaging paper. These can still carry traces of inks and glues, and we use natural salts to wash them away.

An additional fibre binder
Recycled material often has lots of very small fibres so our recycled tissue gets extra support to make sure even the tiniest bits of usable fibre stay in the mix.

Kitchen roll roll only:

Plant-based wet-strength coating
A natural resin coating helps kitchen paper stay intact when you’re using it to mop up spills.

Water treatment (not used directly in our products)

Food-grade water cleaner
If our machines need to pause when it’s hot and humid we may add a safe, food-grade cleaner to our water tanks to prevent bacteria or mould.

Defoamer
Sometimes foam will build up in our water circuits. When this happens we add a small amount of defoamer to the circuits, to keep production smooth and the paper free from imperfections.

That’s it.

Nothing harsh, nothing harmful, and nothing that doesn’t meet strict EU and UK regulations. There are no PFAS (“forever chemicals”) and no BPA in Naked Paper. Our toilet paper as well as our kitchen roll has been certified food contact safe.

We borrow local river water to make our tissue, and our processes are so clean that this water can be filtered and returned to the river after manufacturing, with no ecological impact.

Here’s it all laid out.
