Naked Paper at home with Nancy Birtwhistle

There’s nothing like feeling at home. Shoes off, kettle on, and, if you’re lucky, something baking in the oven.

We’ve been especially lucky at Naked Paper, because we’ve been for cake at Nancy Birtwhistle’s house.

Nancy won Bake Off with her calm, practical approach to baking, and brings that same down-to-earth mindset to greener living. For more than ten years, she’s been making sensible swaps at home; questioning what she uses and choosing better where she can.

It’s a subject we know a bit about ourselves, because we make something that’s easily overlooked, but used every single day.

That’s right. Loo roll.

(And kitchen roll and tissues too.)

Once you stop and really look at a standard loo roll, you realise it’s not as simple as it could be. As Nancy puts it: why does it need to be white?

The answer is, it doesn’t.

Traditional toilet paper is bleached to look bright white, a process that uses unnecessary chemicals and energy. Once you’ve noticed, you can’t unsee it.

That’s why Nancy's made the switch to Naked Paper.

Our toilet paper and tissues are completely bleach free, so they’re a lovely, natural coffee colour; the actual colour of the raw materials we use. Nothing added, nothing hidden. Just soft tissue as it comes.

And in true Nancy fashion, she didn’t stop at simply putting the kettle on. To go with our coffee-coloured loo roll, she went the extra mile and baked a “cake or fake” coffee-flavoured loo roll.

Yes, an actual cake. Yes, it was delicious.

While we don’t generally recommend eating toilet paper, ours is so free from harsh chemicals it’s officially food safe. That said, Nancy’s coffee-flavoured roll is the only one we’d suggest serving with a cup of tea.
