Eco-friendly toilet paper for a non-toxic period
Having your period is the most natural thing in the world. Sadly, the same can’t be said for sanitary products. Commercial tampons and pads often contain bleach, plastic, even fragrances and pesticides.
In May 2025, the UK’s pesticide action network raised the alarm after the toxic pesticide Glyphosate was found in disposable tampons, at 40 times the legal limit for drinking water.
It’s unacceptable. Menstruation is a fact of life for half the world’s population. We shouldn’t have to second guess the safety of period care.
Our team at Naked Paper is mostly women, and if you’re anything like us you’re probably trying to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to period care. But here’s something you might not have considered yet: your toilet paper.
It’s a small thing, but it’s part of the picture, and it’s worth a closer look.

Are pads and tampons bad for you?
Your skin is absorbent. This is especially true of the skin around the vagina, which can very easily absorb chemicals directly into your bloodstream without them being filtered by your liver in the way that food would be.
So if your tampons or pads contain bleach, artificial fragrances, or harsh chemicals, this can be cause for concern; and unfortunately, lots of them do. Chemicals and materials used for standard sanitary products have been linked to irritation, allergic reactions, and even hormone disruption.
Of course, the environmental impact matters too. Conventional pads and tampons can contain up to 90% plastic, and they’re mostly single-use. Those of us who menstruate will use around 11,000 disposable period products over the course of our lives; that’s a lot of plastic heading to landfill, polluting seas, and clogging waterways.
Luckily, there are more and more options out there. Silicone menstrual cups which can be easily cleaned and re-used have been steadily gaining popularity over the last twenty years, along with washable cloth pads and bleach-free tampons and pads. It means less pollutants in the environment, and less unknown chemicals close to your skin.
We think the same principles should apply to toilet paper.

The best toilet paper to use on your period
Toilet paper isn’t the main character when it comes to menstrual care, but you wouldn’t want to go without it. Most of us need to visit the loo more often during that time of the month, and with more to clean up, we’ll generally use more toilet paper as well.
If you’re already using bleach-free sanitary products and you’d like to pair them with bleach free toilet paper, we’ve got good news.
Pesticides have been in the news so we’ll get them out of the way first. The bamboo we use to make our bamboo facial tissues, kitchen paper, and toilet paper is grown in huge natural forests, with no pesticides.
All of our products are also bleach-free and come in their natural shades of brown, with no harsh chemicals to change the colour of our tissue.
In fact, we don’t use any harsh chemicals at all. The soaps, salts, and glues we use to clean and bind our paper meet REACH certification requirements, which means they’re non-toxic, and we’ve also tested our bamboo and recycled rolls to make sure they’re free of PFAS or “forever chemicals,” as well as hormone-disrupting BPA.
Our products are gentle on your body, and our processes are gentle on our environment. Every bleach-free sheet is made using renewable energy and packaged without plastic. Naked Paper loo rolls are soft, great value, and they come to your door with next day delivery.
One less thing to think about when mother nature pays a visit.
Eco-friendly toilet paper for a non-toxic period
If we’re going to use something once and dispose of it, it makes sense to keep it as simple and low-impact as possible.
Toxic ingredients don’t belong in intimate products, whether we use them every day or every month. So at Naked Paper, we keep it simple. If you want to find out more about how we make our gentle, sustainable products, and see the results of our testing, there’s a wealth of information on our green credentials page.
