Where to buy eco toilet paper

We talk a lot about the environmental impact of toilet paper on this blog, because we know its important to our customers, and it’s important to us. But at the end of the day the most important thing about toilet paper is that it’s there, fuss-free, when you need it.

Your loo roll might be the most wholesome, low impact, guilt-free option around but if it’s not there when nature calls, you’re up the proverbial creek.

So today we’re taking a break from toilet paper processes to talk about toilet paper procurement. Where can planet-conscious shoppers buy thoughtfully-made toilet paper

Which is the best eco-friendly toilet paper?

First things first, how to spot an eco-friendly toilet paper when you see it? At Naked Paper we pride ourselves on setting a standard across the board when it comes to our raw materials, our supply chain, the way we power our processes and the extra ingredients we use to make our tissue.

The first difference you’ll notice from standard toilet paper is that our rolls are brown or beige. This is because we don’t bleach our raw materials, which are either fast-growing bamboo or recycled cardboard. We take these raw materials and turn them into tissue using renewable energy, in a factory where everyone is paid at least a living wage. We don’t wrap them using colourful chemical dyes or plastic

So what’s the final cost for these wholesome rolls? We think it’s important that the most sustainable habits should be affordable, and the easiest to pick up. Sheet for sheet, we match the big brands on price. And when it comes to convenience…

Where can you buy eco-friendly toilet paper?

Few things are worse than reaching for a roll and finding nothing but cardboard. When it comes to toilet paper you need a reliable, regular supply.

At Naked Paper, we can deliver to most UK addresses next-day, with DPD’s fleet of friendly couriers. No need to lug a big box home from the shop, no panic when you realise you’re on the last roll. And if you want the luxury of setting and forgetting, our flexible subscriptions mean you get the right amount at the right time, with 10% off the standard price. Easy to change, easy to cancel, and no risk of running out.

And yes, we factor all of the emissions from transport - from shipping our raw materials to bringing our rolls to your door - into our climate footprint. We’re still much lower than standard toilet paper, because our rolls are manufactured without fossil fuels.

But what about those who prefer to pick up their rolls with the weekly shop? You can find us on Ocado, where our rolls are ready and waiting to add to your basket alongside the rest of your essentials. And as for other large stores, watch this space!

While we’re talking shops, we’ll take a minute to shout out refill stores. These eco-shopping destinations are popping up all over the country, in Brighton we have several fantastic options! The teams who run these shops will stock their shelves with environmental and ethical purchasing in mind. A special shoutout to Island Refill on the Isle of Wight - Fiona and her team have been stocking our rolls from the start, and we’re delighted to have their wonderful customers on board.

Is there an eco-friendly alternative to toilet paper?

We’ve made the case for Naked Paper as an eco-friendly toilet paper option, and outlined where you can buy it. But what are some alternatives to toilet paper if you want to ditch the rolls altogether?

The question comes up frequently in the zero-waste movement, whose followers aim to live lives with the smallest possible waste footprint. In 2024 Zero waste champion Robin Greenfield uploaded a video of his low-impact tiny home in the woods, in which he shows off the leafy plants he cultivates near his composting toilet, which serve as natural toilet paper!

But most of us don’t live in the woods! So what are our options?

Bidets are a popular alternative, and in some countries they've been used for centuries. In Japan, bidet toilets incorporate built-in washing functions - some even have drying features! The Middle East and South Asia also favour water-based cleaning, with handheld bidet sprayers known as "shattafs" a common fixture in bathrooms. In the UK and Europe, bidets tend to be their own bathroom fitting, separate to the toilet, but bidet attachments are growing in popularity.

Then there’s the "family cloth". These are essentially small square cloths that are washed and reused. They’re generally just reserved for number ones, and definitely not for everyone, but they’re a low-waste option as long as you factor in the energy and water you need to wash them.

Even if you go down one of these routes, chances are you’ll still want a toilet roll or two around for guests, or for drying. It won't surprise you to learn we think Naked Paper is the perfect option to partner with bidets, in fact, we've got a whole blog about it

That’s exactly what we make at Naked Paper. So whether you want a one-time order or a regular delivery we’ve got you covered. And if you ever do decide to switch to a bidet, we support your choice! Just keep a roll handy for visitors.
