Why we make Naked Paper in Spain

On our website and social media, we often share photos and stories from our brilliant Spanish manufacturing partner, LC Paper, the family-run factory that makes our soft toilet rolls, tissues, and kitchen rolls.

But because we’re a UK-based company selling to UK customers, this naturally prompts a fair question: why don’t we make our products in the UK?

It’s a very good question.

Why we don't make toilet paper in the UK

We speak to tissue mills in the UK regularly, and at the moment, there are no UK mills set up to make tissue without using fossil fuels.

That has a big impact on the climate footprint of your everyday loo roll.

The biggest source of emissions in tissue manufacturing isn’t transport; it’s drying. To turn wet pulp into soft, dry sheets, the tissue passes through heat of over 600°C, going from wet to dry in 1.4 seconds.

Most tissue mills generate that heat by burning natural gas. The result is a huge amount of fossil fuel use and CO₂ emissions.

Our Spanish factory is one of the few in the world that’s already gone fossil-fuel-free, cutting emissions dramatically compared with traditional mills.

The big picture

If we made our products in the UK right now, we’d have to switch to gas-fired drying. It would dramatically increase the climate impact of every roll we sell.

Yes, this includes all of the emissions from transport of our raw materials, delivery to the UK, and final shipping to customers.

We reckon that’s a saving worth a few extra miles.
